Hasnaa Naila, usually called Naya, is an educator and a Master's student in International Education at New York University (NYU). At NYU, she is a recipient of the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) Scholarship and formerly Donald & Jean Johnson Fellowship. Her research interests are study abroad policies and the Global North-South dynamics in the International Education field. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the International Relations program from Universitas Gadjah Mada with a study focus on gender and postcolonial studies. She was an exchange student with the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange & Study/AFS program in 2014-2015 where she was hosted in Oak Park, Illinois. In 2019, she also went on a summer exchange program studying Social Entrepreneurship at Singapore Management University under the Tahir SMU-UGM Management and Faculty Development Scholarship.
Naya is now a current intern at Global Cities, Inc., a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies, where she engages with students and educators from K-12 schools in cities around the world. She started her teaching career in 2018, when she became an IELTS and conversational English teacher for Discovery English. She has also done internships in various institutions namely Amnesty International Indonesia, Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC), and Bina Antarbudaya (AFS Indonesia). Upon graduating from her undergraduate study in 2020, she became an Educational Consultant and Study Abroad Mentor at Indonesia’s biggest study abroad startup, Schoters. In 2021, she then joined Sekolah Cikal, one of the most progressive schools in Indonesia, as a full-time Homeroom Teacher and Program Leader.
In the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, she initiated BisaBelajar, a socio-educational organization which supports access and quality of education in Indonesia. Up until 2022, BisaBelajar has partnered with 54 schools in 11 provinces in Indonesia whose students mostly come from underprivileged and underrepresented backgrounds. BisaBelajar has worked with local, national, and international partners including Plan International, and was featured in The Jakarta Post, Indonesia’s English-based national newspaper.
