Policymaking in International Education: The View from Washington, D.C.

The session deconstructs the U.S. federal policy climate for international education and exchange and recent political activity impacting NAFSA members, including 2024 election outcomes, funding in a constrained budget environment, immigration policies, and congressional and administration actions affecting study abroad and cultural exchange.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the current policy climate in Washington with regard to international education and exchange programs as well as the current status of immigration policy changes/reform.
  • Identify and evaluate key policy initiatives that affect international education and exchange.
  • Critically evaluate the current state of the federal budget requests for Department of State educational and cultural exchange programs.
