Indigenous Global Learning Using an Equity-and-Justice-Oriented Lens

The Global Justice and Change Program at Toronto Metropolitan University is funded by the government of Canada (GSO Pilot) and focuses on global learning for Indigenous students, exploring Haudenosaunee culture and wisdom in Aotearoa New Zealand through a justice-oriented lens. Faculty and administrators share perspectives, lessons, and best practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Adopt critical pedagogical approaches that promote Indigenous ways of knowing.
  • Partner with Indigenous students, educators and communities in curriculum development.
  • Examine biases and positionality by unpacking assumptions about "success" in global education, reflecting on power dynamics in international partnerships, and identifying ways to disrupt colonial mindsets in program design.
  • Develop a nuanced, equity-oriented approach to Indigenous global learning that challenges colonial mindsets and promotes justice for Indigenous peoples.
