Creating an Inclusive Alternative to Study Abroad: Virtual Exchange Between Japan and Hawaii
Wednesday, May 28, 2025
1:00 PM – 1:50 PM PST
International fully integrated virtual exchange is an alternative to study abroad for underrepresented student groups and those unable to participate in semester-long international travel. Presenters from Hawaii and Japan will discuss their five-year collaboration to create a unified international classroom through distance learning tools and technologies.
Learning Objectives:
Reconceptualize virtual exchange as a tool to address diversity goals and inequities in study abroad as opposed to a response to travel restrictions.
Formulate a plan to create new institutional partnerships specifically designed for virtual exchange goals.
Design virtual exchange programs to address both internationalization goals and institutional missions.
Evaluate intercultural learning in virtual exchange programs using scientifically validated measures of intercultural competence, such as cultural intelligence and intercultural sensitivity.
