Political Discourse, Protest, and Activism: Advising International Students and Scholars on Rights and Risks

In an era of elevated political discourse and organized disruption, designated school officials (DSOs) and alternate responsible offices (AROs) must advise international students and scholars of their rights and risks when engaging in political activism. This session outlines institutional considerations to balance the protection of students' and scholars' rights and uphold community standards when disruptions happen on campus.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine U.S. free speech protections and avenues for effective activism and advocacy.
  • Understand U.S. immigration-related risks that may follow an arrest or criminal charge, as well as risks the student/scholar may face abroad.
  • Explore institutional considerations for protecting both personal rights and community standards when disruptions happen on campus.
