“Extreme Vetting” and Advising Students and Scholars about Travel

Executive Orders, statements from agency leaders, and current news headlines all indicate that students and scholars traveling to the U.S. and seeking admission into the country may face “extreme vetting.” How can you best advise them about the challenges and help them prepare? Which laws, regulations, and agency policies and procedures should you and your advisees be aware of? What might they expect at the consulate and port of entry? We’ll address these topics and others to help you advise effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  • Better understand key recent developments in agency regulations, policies, and processes and how they may impact your work, your advisees, and your institution.
  • Gain information from agency officials about areas of concern for the NAFSA community through the discussion of specific problems.
  • Learn about tips, tools, and resources designed to enhance your work related to the agency.
