An International Student Advisers Guide on Navigating Anger Across Cultures

Anger is an emotion that can be a response to unrealistic expectations or frustration. International student advisers often work with students who are angry, and it is important to recognize that these students' strong feelings may be conveyed differently depending on cultural dynamics. This session provides advisers with skills to better understand and respond to angry students from different cultural backgrounds.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the distinction between anger, aggression, and assertiveness.
  • Understand the dynamics of anger and how various cultural values, norms, and communication styles can impact how it is or is not expressed.
  • Recognize how your own cultural mindset and biases can impact a student’s anger.
  • Gain knowledge, and skills to use when dealing with an international student who is angry.
