Eriko Katsumata is a Professor of International Communication at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan. She specializes in teaching intercultural communication and multicultural education. For a decade, she also managed the department's study abroad advising office, providing invaluable support to students seeking international experiences. She graduated from Claremont Graduate University and San Diego State University with a Ph.D. in Education.
Her research interests include intercultural communication, active learning, COIL, and intercultural training. She served on the Steering Committee of SIETAR Japan for 12 years and was Vice President from 2017 to 2021. She is also a member of the International Education and Resource Network (iEARN) and project leader of "Machinto - Hiroshima/Nagasaki for Peace" and "GOMI on Earth". The "Machinto" project focuses on peace education, where students learn about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and discuss strategies for promoting peace. The "GOMI on Earth" project encourages students to share and address issues related to waste management. Her recent publications include "The Voice of Women in Higher Education" (in "Women's Empowerment for a Sustainable Future", 2023, Springer), "Intercultural Training for Study Abroad" (2022, Shumpusha), and "Communication through Active Learning" (2019, Kenkyusha). Eriko Katsumata's varied initiatives make her an expert in developing often neglected and underestimated soft skills among students.
