Prof. Suresh Subramaniam is Vice Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the George Washington University, Washington DC. In his role as Vice Provost, he oversees the university’s graduate student experience and collaborates with GWU’s different schools on graduate programs and policies. Prior to his appointment as Vice Provost, he served as the Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2016 to 2022. His successful tenure as department chair led to a substantial rise in the department’s research expenditures and in the U.S. News graduate rankings of the department’s programs in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.
Prof. Subramaniam received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1997. He is also an active researcher and continues to mentor doctoral students and publish his research. His research interests are in the architectural, algorithmic, and performance aspects of communication networks, with current emphasis on optical networks, cloud computing, data center networks, and IoT. He has published about 270 peer-reviewed papers in these areas. Dr. Subramaniam is a co-editor of three books on optical networking. He has served in leadership positions for several top conferences including IEEE Communications Society’s flagship conferences. He has served on the editorial boards of 7 journals. During 2012 and 2013, he served as the elected Chair of the IEEE Communications Society Optical Networking Technical Committee. He has received 6 Best Paper Awards, the 2017 SEAS Distinguished Researcher Award from George Washington University, and the 2022 ONTC Outstanding Technical Achievement Award. He was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer during 2018-2021. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association.
