Assistant Professor of Practice, Spanish
Ohio State University
Stephaine Aubry is an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the Ohio State University. She teaches the community-based learning course ‘Spanish in Ohio,’ where Spanish majors and minors develop intercultural competence and global citizenship skills through their collaborations in local Latino communities. Through the generous support of World Learning and Community Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS), she is developing new curriculum related to refugee resettlement, so that OSU students can learn from communities with ties to countries outside of Latin America, while developing a more complete understanding of migration and displacement.
Stephanie’s research centers on democratization in El Salvador and related push factors for migration. She has served as an expert witness on country conditions in El Salvador for asylum cases before U.S. immigration courts, and as a legal volunteer in an ICE detention facility designated for mothers and children. Most recently, she has begun researching LGBTQ+ activism in El Salvador and is developing collaborative online international learning (COIL) activities for the ‘Spanish in Ohio’ course. She hopes to connect OSU students with activists in El Salvador through virtual discussions and projects to provide students with opportunities to collaborate in intercultural contexts, regardless of whether they have the ability to travel abroad.
