Sonia Fernandes, MA

Sonia Fernandes currently works for the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Consular Officer in Washington, D.C. Her previous posts include: Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Prior to working for the Department of State, Sonia worked in the international education field as a DSO/ARO for six years. She has been a NAFSA member since 2012, graduated from the NAFSA Academy in 2012 and presented at several national and regional NAFSA conferences.

I presented this topic at the NAFSA Bi-Regional X & XI conference in Montreal in 2023, and at the Career Center session at the NAFSA Annual conference in Washington DC in 2019. It was called Career Paths Outside the Traditional International Education Profession. I also presented this topic as a Poster presentation at the NAFSA conference in Philadelphia in 2018. It was called DSO to Diplomat: Expand and Strengthen Career Options. My prior experience includes: working at Hofstra University in New York as the Assistant Director DSO/ARO for the International Student/ScholarOffice.
