Wichita State University - and Oklahoma State University -
Tais Solis studied abroad through the Gilman Program at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain, during the fall 2022 semester. As a first-generation Mexican-American college student, she deeply valued the opportunity provided by the Gilman Program to learn and connect with individuals from around the world. While in Spain, Tais immersed herself in Basque culture, picked up some of the Basque language, and honed her Spanish skills. During this time, she also completed her Spanish double major. Her experiences abroad offered her valuable insights into different lifestyles and a deeper understanding of Spain, which sparked a desire to learn more about different countries and their customs.
After completing the program, Tais actively shared her experiences and emphasized the importance of higher education with students at Wichita State University and within her community, highlighting the opportunities available through programs like Gilman. Her experience abroad reinforced her belief in the importance of ensuring that students in Kansas have access to similar opportunities. With a strong passion for global education, Tais now aspires to pursue a master's degree in global studies or education. She continues to study French, with the goal of reaching fluency. As a Gilman Alumni Ambassador, Tais is excited to take on her new role, aiming to inform students in Kansas and across the United States about the resources available for studying abroad and how these opportunities can expand their global knowledge.
