Gerald Maki enjoys serving as Professor of English and Coordinator of Global Education at Ivy Tech Community College, Indianapolis (US). He completed doctoral coursework at Purdue University with a primary in Contemporary Literature and secondaries in Theory and Cultural Studies, Post-Colonial Literature, and Film. Prof. Maki is a proud United Nations Global Diplomacy Fellow via UNITAR and has received numerous recognitions – including multiple teaching awards from Purdue University, Ivy Tech Indianapolis’ 2023 President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction, and NCSPOD (the oldest association in North America) for his work in faculty development.
In 2022, Prof. Maki was selected by the American Councils for International Education to develop international virtual exchanges with Central Asian partners, and he currently leads Ivy Tech Community College’s statewide efforts for the expansion of COILs and related global learning programming. Gerald has presented at over 40 conferences - including NAFSA in 2023, EURIE in 2024 (Istanbul, Turkey), twice at the Science Summit at the UNGA, and co-moderated a panel on Science Education at the Danish Embassy in NYC. He is a proud alumnus of The International Center’s James T. Morris Global Leadership Series (2023) where he met with leaders at Eli Lilly and the Indiana Statehouse - as well as the program's namesake, former Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme. He has multiple peer-reviewed publications on topics ranging from educational philosophy to world cinema.
Prof. Maki is GRATEFUL for the opportunity to continue to learn from so many amazing educators at NAFSA and values the importance of strengthening connections during times of increased global tension. He is passionate about creating empowering experiences for students – including advocating for expanded trauma-informed teaching practices and encouraging all learners to view themselves as global leaders.
