Manager, Learning Abroad (Short Programs)
Western Sydney University
Steven McDonald has spent over 20 years shaping the future of global education, but at heart, he still considers himself a boy from the bush. Originally from Outback Australia, he brings a down-to-earth approach to his work, believing that international experiences should be transformative, accessible, and deeply meaningful.
As Manager, Learning Abroad (Short Programs), Steven works with universities, businesses, and government partners to create Study Tours, Summer and Winter programs, and international work experiences that open doors for students around the world. A firm believer in the power of connection, he thrives on collaborating with faculty, executives, Learning Abroad practitioners, and university staff, as well as external partners like universities, businesses, NGOs, and governments, to turn ambitious ideas into reality.
He’s managed major government-funded initiatives like the New Colombo Plan, Endeavour, and the Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program, always looking for ways to make global education more innovative, impactful, and sustainable. When he’s not designing new Learning Abroad strategies, you’ll find him sharing insights on the international stage, presenting at conferences on sustainability, student mobility, and program innovation.
But what he really loves? Meeting people who share his passion for global education and bouncing around ideas for the next big thing. If you’re the kind of person who sees international education as more than just travel—but as a life-changing journey—he’d love to connect.
So come and say ‘G’day’!
