Charmagne Herlien is the Director, International Employment & Scholar Services at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC). At UIC she leads a team of scholar advisors while processing H-1B, J-1, TN, O-1, and other employment statuses for the university and medical campuses. Other duties include training departmental administrators on working with this population, communicating with stakeholders on various HR, business, and employment issues, and assisting with office-wide programming for students and scholars. Charmagne has been involved in immigration advising, primarily for scholars, at large research institutions, for over 20 years. Prior to her current position, she spent 6 years in Region XII as the Associate Director, International Scholar Services, at the California Institute of Technology and before that as an Immigration Advisor at UC San Diego. In regard to NAFSA involvement, Charmagne is a current and long-time Trainer Corps member. In the past, she served as a Regulatory Ombudsperson in Regions XII and V, led the J-1 24-Month Bar Task Force review as part of the ISSP, Exchange Visitor Program Committee, and was a Region V Communications Coordinator. Prior to advising scholars, Charmagne worked in international admissions, programming for international community college students, and teaching ESL in the U.S. and Japan. She earned her MEd in Instructional Leadership, Educational Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
