Moving Beyond Immigration to Make Diversity and Inclusion Accessible for International Students

International students arrive in the United States having to relate their identity to this country's diverse racial and social landscape. However, they often lack the context and knowledge needed to do so. Presenters explore strategies to help students unpack these complexities, introduce models from three institutions for creating different campus cultures and resources, and discuss agile programming in ever-evolving settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Equip educators with strategies to help international students understand and relate their experience and identity to the complex racial and social structure in the U.S., emphasizing the importance of contextual knowledge.
  • Present and analyze methods from three different institutions that can be adapted to various campus cultures, sizes, and student groups, providing participants with practical tools for both online and in-person implementations.
  • Enable educators to design and implement agile programming that incorporates student feedback and addresses the evolving challenges students face in a constantly changing social and political environment.
