Associate Director, Programs and Communications
International House at the University of Chicago
Michael Kulma is the head of Programs and Communications at International House at the University of Chicago. He also serves as Executive Director of OneShared.World, a young non-profit focused on interdependence in global efforts to address our biggest existential challenges. Previously, Michael was the Senior Director for Global Programs & Resource Development at NAFSA: Association of International Educators. In that capacity, he was responsible for managing the research and scholarship agenda for the organization, leading intellectual collaboration across departments to develop high-quality learning resources and publications relevant to the field of international education. Michael also oversaw NAFSA’s global programming portfolio. Prior to joining NAFSA, Michael worked at the University of Chicago as Associate Vice President for Global Engagement, where he oversaw four different areas, including global centers, initiatives and partnerships, operations, and external relations and communications. Before coming to the university, Michael worked for over thirteen years at the Asia Society, most recently as Executive Director for Global Leadership Initiatives. Michael has a background in policy, media, and academic research and writing and has contributed to print and broadcast media on Asia-focused issues. He is a Board member of the National Down Syndrome Society. Michael holds a BA in economics from the University of Chicago, a master’s in public and international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in political science from the City University of New York.
